Our Curriculum

Curriculum overview

Our curriculum vision is centred around our school values and sets the highest aspirations for every child.

We believe that the curriculum and the school are inextricably linked. The curriculum is the product of the expertise of our staff and high-quality published programmes. It is built on a deep understanding of the children and the community we serve and a desire to spark wonder and instil a love of learning, and is structured to ensure that children leave our school with the skills and knowledge needed for the next stage of their education.

Children develop a defined bank of knowledge across multiple areas, continually making connections to earlier learning to deepen understanding, and building towards a point where they can confidently demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have acquired. We also believe that our curriculum must extend beyond ‘traditional’ subjects and include opportunities for enrichment, sport, performance and an understanding of our local area.

Our core values, together with a strong commitment to PSHE, wellbeing, diversity and tolerance, ensure that personal development lies at the heart of the curriculum. Success must be measured by the extent to which our children demonstrate our values alongside their knowledge acquisition, skillset, assessment performance and readiness for the next stage in their journey as responsible, global citizens and community champions.

Our curriculum development is guided by the following principles:

  • be informed by our knowledge of every child
  • ensure a rich and broad offer for our children
  • provide children with a deeper understanding of their local area
  • encompass the Trust’s five core values
  • be structured to enable to connections between different topics
  • set children up for success at secondary school and beyond
  • provide opportunities for enrichment and extra curriculum learning.

Blowers Green Primary School – EXCEL Curriculum Intent

Blowers Green Primary School – EXCEL Curriculum Intent

At Blowers Green Primary School, our EXCEL curriculum is underpinned by a commitment to delivering high-quality, knowledge-rich learning that ensures children know more and remember more, in line with the principles of the Ofsted Subject Research Reviews. It is designed to enable all pupils to build schemata—interconnected webs of knowledge that help them make meaningful links and deepen understanding over time. This takes children on a journey of memorable learning through rich and purposeful experiences, culminating in authentic outcomes which leave a legacy.

Fluency in the core subjects, with reading at the heart, enables access to the full curriculum and is therefore integral to our approach. Our knowledge-rich curriculum is underpinned by key concepts, ensuring coverage, progression and retention of knowledge and skills. Children explore concepts throughout the curriculum, revisiting them in a wide range of contexts and through the lens of different subjects. This promotes a deep understanding of the concepts and enables the transfer of knowledge to the long-term memory.

Blowers Green serves a community with high levels of disadvantage, a significant proportion of pupils with SEND, those in receipt of FSM, and many vulnerable learners. Our curriculum is therefore designed to:

  • Prioritise social mobility: Embedding cultural capital through enrichment experiences, aspirational role models, and exposure to high-quality texts and vocabulary.
  • Close gaps in language and communication: Systematic development of spoken language and oracy across all subjects, supported by our partnership with Voice 21.
  • Ensure equity of access: Scaffolded learning and adaptive teaching strategies so that all pupils, including those with SEND, can access and succeed in the full curriculum.
  • Address barriers to learning: Strong emphasis on early reading and phonics, targeted interventions, and personalised support plans for vulnerable learners.
  • Build resilience and aspiration: Through authentic outcomes, purposeful projects, and opportunities to engage with wider society, preparing pupils for future success.
  • Safeguard well-being: A curriculum that nurtures emotional literacy, self-regulation, and positive relationships, ensuring pupils feel safe and ready to learn.

Our approach ensures that every child thrives, regardless of starting point, and leaves Blowers Green equipped with the knowledge, skills, and cultural capital to make ambitious choices for their future

Impact & Assessment

Effective assessment provides vital information to improve teaching and learning outcomes.

We provide children with regular feedback on their learning so that they understand what they need to do to improve, and our lesson plans are formed with a detailed knowledge of each pupil and their needs.

We also give parents/carers regular reports on their child’s progress so that teachers, children and parents/carers can all work together to raise the attainment of the child.
